Altered Art Gallery

Here is a sampling of some different types of altered art I have made. One of the things I love about this style of art is that there are so many components to it that the possibilities are endless. I love that I can always learn something new-it keeps me interested and creating.

Altered Matchboxes

Altered Bottle caps

These were made for an exchange at Artwerx 2005. They were inspired by Emmy Tofa who sent me a little piece of her funky art for my very own.

Altered Mirrors

Dream mirror.jpg (129599 bytes) This is the first mirror I altered. I decided to do a dream/travel theme. I am pleased with how this mirror came out and I plan to hang it somewhere in my house. Probably in my bedroom. I was surprised how quickly I could create it. Very easy and relaxing to work on.

I made this for my friend Chris' birthday. Since she owns a quilt shop, I decided to work on a quilting theme. Turned out the blue fits perfectly with a room in her home that is entirely blue. I also didn't know it, but she has a thing for butterflies too. Serendipity! Mirror for Chris.JPG (327790 bytes)

I had bought a couple of packets of old Pharmacy labels and some vintage prescriptions with the idea of creating this mirror with them. I am really pleased with how it came out. I was asked to make a second one as a store sample.

Another mirror made using the new line of papers from Lazar Studiowerx. I wrapped a paintbrush with wired strung with beads, added a paper stencil #5 and a quote about artists at the bottom. This was just for fun.

Isn't this fun? I think this would be a great mirror to have in a kid's room! It was so much fun to make!

Playing around with backgrounds and I came up with this.

Assemblages

I made this assemblage after being gifted with a cigar box. I found this really cool German text in a cast-off book at the library. The ancestors are adopted.
The quote I chose reads" The greatest legacy we can leave our children is the gift of roots and wings." This piece has alot of personal meaning for me.

This assemblage was made using a shadow box. I lined it with an old sewing pattern and painted over it with gesso. It's filled with a bunch of old sewing notions I saved up to put inside. The quilt fragment dates to the 1920's and the ruffler I found at Value Village along with a bunch of other sewing machine attachments for $3. I don't have a vintage sewing machine but I just couldn't let them sit there. I brought them home figuring I would find some way to use them and I did! Serendipity again!
A gift for my Gram for Mother's Day. I created this shadow box assemblage using photos of her family from when she was a child and adding bits of things that would have meaning to her. I wrote a poem about where she came from as a child and added it around the frame. The background of the piece is techniques I learned from Lynn Perrella.
